Your Motivational Speaker: Dr. Julie Bradshaw MBE

At the tender age of only fifteen, Julie Bradshaw became one of the youngest people to swim the English Channel in a British Junior Record of 10 hours 9 minutes. Twenty three years later she was not only to swim the Channel the ‘Blue Riband’ of marathon swimming again, but this time she astounded the world, by using the hardest swimming stroke, the BUTTERFLY in 14 hours 18 minutes and claimed her 12th world record. Butterfly is also the stroke Julie used to swim 28.5 miles around Manhattan Island in 2011.

Julie’s passion for open water swimming began in the Lake District at the age of 14, conquering England’s largest lake, Lake Windermere. The seed was sown, a seed that has grown into an absolute passion over the many years that Julie has been involved, and continues to be to this day.

Her illustrious career has earned her an amazing 20 plus world records to date, more than any other marathon and long distance swimmer and is doubtless considered one of the finest long distance swimmers in the world. Along the way, Julie has used her swimming to accrue a mammoth total for various charities.

In 2004 she was nominated for the Sunday Times Sports Women Inspirational Award. 2006 saw Julie awarded an MBE for ‘Services to Swimming and Charity’, soon to be followed by Loughborough University who conferred upon her an Honorary Doctorate for her ‘Outstanding Achievements and Charity Work’. More Honours were to come and 2007 saw Julie Bradshaw inducted into the International Marathon Swimming Hall of Fame, Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

All of this has been a culmination of a lifetime of hard work, determination and complete focus, a positive mental attitude which reflects Julie’s strength and character. Taking all her experiences over 36 years, Julie is able to “Inspire, Motivate and Excite” her audiences and adapt her presentations to suit the needs of any client.

Through her stories, Julie’s delivers messages that enable people in all walks of life, encouraging them to ‘Follow their Dreams’ and Believe in Themselves’. She also offers tools to achieve this.

A great speaker is first a great person who happens to speak well.

“The bend in the road is not the end of the road unless you fail to make the turn.”

The Sporting/Adventurer and Swimmer/Motivational Speaker

Julie’s remarkable story is powerful and inspirational. She talks with much experience on her self-belief, motivation, mental tenacity, dedication and training, teamwork, her ability to overcome obstacles (‘no failure, only feedback”), what it’s like to swim in cold water such as her 12 hour swim of Loch Lomond in 38 degrees F, and much more. Julie brings her talks alive with visuals of her swims, for example her Butterfly Solo English Channel swim of 2002, as well as many funny stories.

Julie also talks about her inner strength to achieve and her never-ending focus on what she wants, her dreams – as she says, “Always something new, different, more difficult and challenging, never the same swim twice – the appeal of what has never been done before, means I am forever moving forwards in life.”

The real value in any form of achievement, is not in achieving the thing itself; the real value is in who you become in the process.
